The - Aristoteles Programme

Due to his unique role in founding ethics, his contribution to the understanding of the animal world, and his educational involvement, Aristoteles is the perfect symbol for a Programme devoted to advancement of the awareness, knowledge and progress in animal bioethics in Europe, through higher education institutions.

Animal bioethics : a need for development of new European curricula.
Farm animal breeding and husbandry, laboratory animal use in experimental studies, companion animal care, wild animal management, and foods and products derived from animals are all fields of human activity and behaviour that may lead to ethical concerns. They can involve issues such as respect for life, animal instrumentalization and welfare, patentability of animals and genes, respect for biodiversity and environment, fair trade, as well as socio-economic and cultural consequences. While this subject is generally underdeveloped in higher education institutions, the general public is more and more worried about these aspects, and professionals and policy makers need to take them increasingly into account. Historical and cultural differences across Europe, but also common heritage and regulations, emphasise the importance of an European approach and sharing of experience.

A survey in 2001:
As a consequence, it was desirable to establish the current European situation with regard to teaching provision in this subject area. For this purpose, a survey has been conducted in 20 European countries, from July to October 2001, in all higher education institutions offering courses in animal bioethics in the fields of Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine, Animal Science or Aquaculture.

A Workshop in 2002 in Nancy (France):
On 23 & 24 May 2002, a Workshop on "Teaching Animal Bioethics in Higher Education in Europe" has been held in Nancy. The conclusions of the survey have been drawn. The outcomes will be guidelines for the development of curricula, as well as development of course materials such as case-studies available on-line, and the initiation of shared delivery of courses between AFANet institutions.
